66 Leaders, One Message: NSW Life Sciences Manufacturing Is Ready to Move

Last Thursday 15 October, 66 people from across industry, academia and the life sciences ecosystem gathered at Macquarie University Incubator for the NSW Advanced Manufacturing Breakfast Forum, hosted by BioNSW. The question on the table: how can NSW strengthen its sovereign manufacturing capability and build a globally competitive life sciences ecosystem?

A full room at a free event shows how much interest there is in life science manufacturing in NSW.

The morning was chaired by Jon Ince, Chair of the BioNSW Manufacturing Committee and General Manager of Cytiva ANZ. Our panel brought perspectives from across the sector:

Discussion covered advanced biomanufacturing and synthetic biology, pharmaceutical product development, medical device manufacturing, and what it will take to build sovereign capability in NSW.

"What stood out was how many pharma, biopharma and medical device manufacturers face common challenges, yet often tackle them independently. Bringing the community together to identify shared priorities and strengthen our collective voice was an important first step we all took together."Jon Ince, Chair of the BioNSW Manufacturing Committee

Three messages came through clearly

1. A bipartisan approach. Manufacturing investment runs on long timelines. Companies need a consistent business environment that holds across political cycles so they can invest with confidence.

2. Grants that carry research through to commercialisation. Funding systems need to support translation, not just discovery, so promising research reaches the market.

3. Federal and state alignment. Governments need to coordinate on infrastructure and on funding and filling new manufacturing facilities, so investment, programs and industry needs point in the same direction.

What's next

The strong turnout confirms the need for a collective voice on manufacturing in NSW. The Manufacturing Committee will consider how to build on this momentum, including whether the forum should become a regular event.

Thank you

Thank you to Jon Ince and the BioNSW Manufacturing Committee, our panel, and everyone who joined us. Thanks also to the Macquarie University DeepTech Incubator for sponsoring and hosting.
