Hype, Hope and a Coffee Order


BioNSW's Commercialisation Breakfast put an IP specialist, two investors, a medtech industry veteran and clinician, together with a university dean in one room to sort genuine innovation from noise. The line that stuck wasn't about a technology at all.

“Go and buy people coffee. Make friends. Put yourself in their line of sight.”

That was Mark Flynn's advice to a room full of researchers and founders on 8 September, and it had nothing to do with cell and gene therapy, mRNA or AI diagnostics. Flynn, a medtech industry veteran and clinician, BioNSW Board Director and Principal at Global Edge Medtech Consulting, was one of four panellists at BioNSW's Commercialisation Breakfast, “Life Sciences Innovation in 2026: Hype, Hope and What's Next,” hosted at UNSW's CBD campus by the BioNSW Innovation and Commercialisation Committee.

Australia spends more than $10 billion a year on health and medical research, and the sector supports around 350,000 jobs nationally. The harder question, and the one this breakfast was built around, is whether that money is finding the technologies most likely to actually reach patients, rather than the ones that make the best pitch deck.


Reading the signals before the noise starts


The morning opened with remarks from the event’s two sponsors. Kurraba Group’s Nick Smith pointed at what’s already under construction: a 27,000 sqm life sciences facility with PC2 labs, GMP and GLP vivarium space, planning approval secured and completion due in 2029. Then Dr Eric Wei of UNSW delivered the formal welcome and set the frame for the morning: Australia ranks well globally on research output and top-cited papers, and badly on turning that research into commercial outcomes. UNSW’s tech transfer team won’t back a project unless it clears four tests: a significant problem to solve, a clear end user and value proposition, something better than the current standard of care, and a workable regulatory and reimbursement pathway. Ask those questions before the research starts, Wei argued, not after.

Michael Christie, Principal at Spruson & Ferguson and a BioNSW Board Director, then gave an independent read on the patent landscape. His premise: filing data lags the lab by roughly 18 months, so what’s being filed now reflects decisions made well before today, not what’s happening in NSW labs right now. The number worth remembering: NSW files nearly twice as many biotech and pharma patents as any other Australian state, and pharma and biotech are driving almost all of the national growth in filings. His other reads: COVID–related filings spiked hard then dropped away fast, a lesson in what happens when a sector chases one bandwagon technology at once. Lipid nanoparticle and RNA–capping filings have quietly doubled off a low base. Personalised medicine and AI in healthcare show the sharpest recent increases. And by 2025, more than half of all provisional applications were self–filed, most of them AI–drafted and low quality, up from under one in five the year before, while the number of properly, professionally filed patents barely moved. Christie’s open question: has AI quietly raised the bar for what counts as common general knowledge, making genuine patents harder to win even as filing one gets easier?


Four people who fund, license and teach this for a living


David Barda, Chair of the BioNSW Innovation and Commercialisation Committee and Founder of D4 Bioventures, moderated a panel built to disagree, not agree: Jeff Reid of Bioshore Ventures, Laura Wimberger of Proto Axiom, Professor Zee Upton, Dean of the Faculty of Health at UTS, and Mark Flynn. Between them: two active venture funds, a career in biotech patent strategy and clinician, and a Faculty of Health training the next generation of clinicians and researchers.

Their brief was to work out which of AI in healthcare, precision medicine, cell and gene therapy, mRNA, radiopharmaceuticals, regenerative medicine, advanced drug delivery, digital health, organoids and longevity science are converging on real funding and patient impact within the next five to ten years, and which are further away than the hype suggests.

Each panellist brought a different converging trend. Jeff Reid pointed to the decentralisation of care: wearables, ambulatory surgery and at–home monitoring pulling treatment out of hospitals. Zee Upton raised the aging population, and a number worth sitting with: half of NSW’s population is regional, remote or Indigenous, and closing that equity gap will mean allied health workers, nurses and pharmacists doing more, backed by technology. Laura Wimberger flagged women’s health as underfunded and under–data’d, with continuous hormone monitoring as an emerging opportunity. And Mark Flynn framed equity of access more broadly, citing a US figure where 30% of the population lives over an hour from a major trauma centre, and pointing to remote tuning for cochlear implants as an example of technology closing that distance instead of a multi–day trip.

What stood out wasn't disagreement. Two venture investors, an academic dean and a medtech industry veteran, four different vantage points on the same ecosystem, and they landed in a similar place on where the trends and the direction of travel are heading. For a sector that spans capital, research and industry, that kind of alignment is worth noting on its own: it suggests NSW's different corners of the life sciences ecosystem are reading the same signals, not talking past each other.


The advice that outlasted the tech debate


Four different vantage points, and when it came to what actually works, not what’s hyped, their advice converged fast:
